  • Healthy singing is a fundamental concept available in all genres of music resulting in live and recorded performance, focusing on the vocal techniques and practices that promote the well-being and longevity of a singer's voice. It encompasses several key elements tailored to the specific demands of each genre and is combined with skills of stage presence, expression, physical awareness, and mindful interaction with other musicians and professionals both on and off the stage. When these elements of healthy technique and artistry are combined, the resulting impact can be one that expresses a full range experience of the human condition for both the performers and the audience.

Healthy singing encompasses several key principles:

Vocal Technique: Proper breath control, vocal and physical support, and the use of the full vocal range are essential. The singer works to achieve a balance between vocal power and control, allowing for precise pitch, full tone quality, and dynamic expression. This ensures a stable and reliable airflow, reducing vocal stress and maximizing a variety of vocal timbres as required by the music.

Resonance and Placement: Singers focus on creating resonance in the vocal tract and proper placement of sound in the various vocal registers. This enables a warm, clear, and well-projected sound. Sounds and resonance can be all different colors of beautiful, ugly, sorrowful, joyful, and every color and timbre in between. All of those sounds can be described as healthy singing.

Vocal Health: Regular vocal exercises, warm-ups, and cool-downs are crucial to maintain vocal health. Rest, hydration, avoiding vocal strain, and vocal rest are also essential. Vocal health also refers to the habit of practicing, both in and out of the practice room. In addition to vocalizing and learning music, the work of a healthy singer includes text analysis, translations, historical research, memorization, and collaboration with other musicians. Unlike other musicians, singers are not able to practice for multiple hours a day, but non-singing practice is equally important to maintain optimal vocal health. Singers also benefit from regular check-ups with an otolaryngologist to monitor vocal health, and make necessary lifestyle adjustments to their technique or performance practices.

Healthy singing is not limited to any particular genre of music; it is a foundational concept that applies to all vocal styles and disciplines. When these elements are combined and honed mindfully, singers will have the ability to produce expressive and sustainable sound while minimizing the risk of vocal injury. This is a balance that requires knowledge, trusted teachers and coaches, proactive, and ongoing self-care to ensure a long and successfully singing career.

  • My values as a voice teacher are:

Meeting each student where they are when they enter my studio. I assess their individual learning style and keep the lesson focused on you and your needs.

I employ vocal techniques and exercises that can be used directly in the music you’re working on. No tips, tricks, props, or gimmicks…just solid and accessible guidance to help you reach your goals.

I am not interested in the ego or mind games that some voice teachers have flaunted for decades. Ownership over individual singers is unethical and manipulative. I aim to help build your technical skills in order for you to fully express your individual artistry. Fearless singing that is full of confidence and joy.

Technique exists to serve your artistry. I am not interested in robotic singing built on fear of disappointing your teacher. That is not what art is to me.

Working with Rhoslyn was one of the biggest highlights of my Merola summer. She had a holistic approach to pedagogy, a quick diagnostic ear, and a wealth of performing knowledge at every level.
